Colourful ground cover and shining stems

At the gardens at Kilquade the other day I saw several good plant combinations that I thought looked really good and one of the most interesting was this white-stemmed birch surrounded by a tide of Houttynia cordata ‘Chameleon’. This interesting perennial is best known for its orange-scented leaves and its ability to spread almost as fast as mint. But it can be a colourful and useful plant where it can be allowed to spread without getting into trouble and here, with its vigour curbed by the betula it looks pretty good.

It is an odd one. It can be horribly invasive but it never has been with me so far. Sometimes it fades away but it is one that can’t ever be completely trusted I think
