Tulips love the sun
After some wet weather, the sun came out. The wind was cruel but the sun was strong and tempted the tulips open, though they were blowing about n the wind. But the didn’t mind and were as happy as Brits on sunbeds in the Algarve! Just not quite as red.
I said I would update on ‘Leo’ and ‘Golden Leo’ so here they are. Ten bulbs of each in a pot.
Just awesome.
‘Unique de France’ is a sport of the Triumph tulip ‘Ile de France’. It is an oddity because it lacks the grey, waxy coating that most tulips have. It means the leaves are bright green and the flowers are incredibly glossy. I have noticed that some of them had buds that stuck against the leaves as they grew. This may not be a common problem and may have been due to the wet weather. Anyway, they are very red!
But a bit lost in the wallflowers
Among the second year bulbs, ‘Purple Dream’, a lily-flowered tulip, has captured my heart this year. I was not that impressed last year but love it now.
‘Red Dress’ still intrigues with its strange shape
And ‘Spryng Break’ remains a favourite
But who could choose?

I agree – the ‘Leo’s are spectacular once you stop worrying that the caterpillars have not got to them!
