Spring blossom
We seem to be in a period of mild, pleasant weather and it is suiting the garden. At the weekend I sowed some grass seed, hoping that the Sunday rain would water it and the forecast warmth would stimulate germination – fingers crossed it may actually work as planned!
And the mild weather is suiting a couple of plants in the garden too. The big Viburnum x bodnantense in the front garden under a spreading eucalyptus is in full glory right now having not bothered much during winter and making a big, pink, fragrant cloud.
On those rare, sunny days the flowers are especially lovely.
It may also be a good year for the apricot. Though I have other, more modern varieties on the allotment, this was my original and the common ‘Moorpark’. To be honest, although this one is not at the forefront of apricot breeding I find that the fruits are absolutely delicious if allowed to ripen, and the birds leave them alone. I usually hand pollinate the flowers I can reach, with a small paintbrush, and I will do so in the next few days but there are bees around and I hope they may do the job too.
The only fly in the ointment is that wood pigeons have decided they like the taste of the flowers and I have been shooing them away when I see them sitting on the branches, weighing them down as they peck off the flowers. Fortunately there are loads of flowers at the moment.
