Hyophorbe lagenicaulis
Commonly called the bottle palm because of the smooth, grey and swollen trunk, this is one of the most beautiful tropical palms and is a dwarf plant, reaching only about 4m when mature. The crown has about 8 large leaves 3m long and forms a smooth green 80cm crownshaft below which the branched clusters of male and female flowers are produced.
It can be grown in sun or part shade and is native to Mauritius. It is suitable for climates of USDA9a or more and will only tolerate the merest hint of frost.
