Feeding time
Two years ago I put seven goldfish into the pond. Last summer they spawned and I thought I had six fry. As they got bigger and bolder they swam closer to the surface of the murky water and I discovered that I had about 40! Most are brightly coloured which is good because I would not want to cull any darker fish and they are growing well. The local cat scooped out and half ate one of the original fish a few months ago but the rest are growing fast. They recognise the shadow as I approach the pond and gobble down the food. The youngsters are just about big enough to take the pellets whole now after a year of just nibbling before their parents snatched the food away.

we have baby ducks too – i need to take a photo before they are big ducks – they grow so fast
Aw, goldfish babies! I’d love to have a fish pond one day.

How big is your pond?
It is no lake! It is a raised pond that was originally a greenhouse and when that rotted I used the concrete base as the basis of the pond. It is about 3m x 4m and is 50cm deep over 60% of the surface. Because frosts in winter are not usually severe here that is deep enough to protect the fish. I will have to post about it in more detail 🙂
