Brugmansia ‘Angels Proud’

As the summer warms up the brugmansias continue to delight me with their flowers and fragrance. Actually delight is not the word – small, delicate flowers are ‘delightful’ – brugmanias are stupendous!

They are not easy cutomers to please though and as I sit here I realise my next brugmansia post would be more useful if I showed a good and a bad plant to show the difference repotting and feeding makes. But for now it is just a good one! I don’t think any plant repays feeding and constant attention more than these prima donnas. Without flowers they are coarse plants and they are prone to res spider mite, whitefly and caterpillars though I have not had any trouble with any of these so far, or aphids. They get fed weekly (not weakly) and I douse the plants with seaweed extract at least once a fortnight which I think benefits them and also discourages red spider mite though this is far from proven.

Of course there is a price to pay for this beauty and some tend to flower in flushes, looking fabulous one week and awful the next. A plant with dead flowers looks like it is strewn with discarded condoms!

But a few days ago ‘Angels Proud’ was looking fabulous with five huge, double flowers swinging from its branches. The plant is about 1.5m high (including pot) and the blooms are 40cm long so it is pretty awesome, especially so in the evening when the flowers pump out the most intoxicating scent.
