Seaside special: beaches of Wexford
If your idea of a beach is miles of golden sands, blue sea and palm trees you need to go to the Bahamas. But if you can put up without the palms then you won’t find more beautiful beaches than in Co. Wexford. Ireland may be more famous for other features like bogs and potatoes but I can assure you that, when the sun shines (not something that is guaranteed, even here in the sunny southeast) you won’t find more idyllic beaches.
I headed south along the R472 south of Courtown towards Wexford, stopping off now and then to look at the beaches. There are more spots to see and these are just a few, representative beaches.
Castle Morris beach, east of Kilmuckridge. A short walk from the car park, through the sand dunes
Clean sandy beach as far as the eye can see..
… in both directions. It was sunny on the beach but…
… look what was behind me!
Further south was Ballinesker beach. A small river runs down across the beach, crossed by a small bridge
It was still sunny out at sea but the clouds were gathering
Right by the beach at Curracloe
White Gap is the most southerly beach I stopped at and the most commercial, though hardly built up! There is a surf shack and cafe and a few amusements.
When I wrote about Lagurus ovatus I said that I had read it was naturalised in Wexford – and here it was!
Relaxing on the beach
Get over the dunes and the beach is HUGE!
Playing around with the new camera
The dunes are filled with wild flowers like these pyramidal orchids (Anacamptis pyramidalis)
They are scattered around the dunes and in surrounding grassland
They are pollinated by moths including the six spot burnet moth
