Rose ‘Vidal Sassoon’ – again – and again!
I don’t intend to repeat myself too often but ‘Vidal Sassoon’ is proving to be such a talking point in the garden that it would be wrong not to give it’s uniquely coloured blooms a second moment in the spotlight. (For the original post click on the link at the bottom of the page.)
‘Vidal Sassoon'(MACjuliat) was bred by McGredy and was introduced originally, in 1990, as ‘Spiced Coffee’, an appropriate name.It was introduced, as ‘Vidal Sassoon’ in the UK in 1994 and won the Breeders Choice Award in that year. It is also sold as ‘Old Spice’ and, in the USA ‘Siegfried Sassoon’.
It is a Hybrid Tea with large flowers with 15-25 petals although it usually has three to five buds on the strong stems and the flowers seem to have a petal count in the lower end of the range. As I reported before, it is almost impossible to describe the colour of the flowers and they are variously described as fawn, lavender beige, parchment brown, russet, pink, brown or tan. The colour changes with the season, weather and the age of the blooms. At the moment the warm weather seems to be reducing the pinkish tones and they seem more golden, fading to greyish.
What doesn’t vary is the wonderful perfume which is often said to be lemony – which I won’t argue with. The flowers are perfect for picking, especially because of their perfume.
It is a vigorous, healthy rose that has had no disease so far and is rather upright in habit, reaching 90cm. I cannot recommend it too highly and will let the photos, of plants in the garden, taken at different times on the same day, speak for themselves.
UPDATE
Sorry about this but the flowers were looking quite grey today after the high temperatures so I had to take more photos! Is this obsession?
I am enthralled by this rose, hence the high mark!
