Ridiculous food labelling: Old El Paso Smoky Chipotle Chilli and Honey
I am not in a ranty mood but this one annoyed me last night when I went to use it. Ok, I should not have bought it but ever since I visited New Mexico and Arizona I have had a bit of a love affair with chipotle! So when these packs of seasoning were half price I couldn’t resist it. I was unlikely to make the casserole as they said but I thought it would be a good base to a mince stew and what is not to like about smoky chipotle and honey?
It even seems healthy according to the front of the pack which proudly announces that a quarter of the pack only contains 33kcals! Well that’s not quite so startling when you think its just seasoning! Why don’t they put the calorie count on a pack of salt – they could sell it as a low-fat food!
But what made me slightly annoyed was the list of ingredients they said you had to add. What was surprising, after you had bought a pack of seasoning called Chipotle chilli and honey was that you have to add….honey! If I bought a bottle of water and it said ‘to serve add water’ I would feel more than a little cheated. So, having bought this the last things I thought I would have to add were chipotle chillies or honey.
Honey is on the ingredient list, but way down. If there is some reason why they can’t add honey in large enough quantities to taste then why not leave it out and call it smoky chiptle chilli and suggest that you add some honey! It may not be deliberately misleading but it does seem odd to me!

but was it good to eat?
LOL! In fairness, although I didn’t follow the recipe, apart form putting in onions and extra honey, it was tasty! Glad the comments is working again now!
