Growing sweet peas – update
Following on from previous posts about the sweet peas these have now been planted out. The plants were grown in pots, sown last autumn, and pinched out so they produced one strong basal shoot and some secondary shoots. They were planted out about two weeks ago. I had to protect them from slugs which lay in wait, encouraged by the compost that was added to the soil.
Now they have established themselves a little and started to make growth I went along the rows and removed all but the strongest shoot and fixed this to the cane with some wire rings. I made these with some galvanised wire wrapped round a broom handle and cut them off with tins nips. As the stems grow I will pinch out the tendrils at the end of each leaf. The advantage of using sweet pea rings is that they are quick to fix and also to remove later in the season when I come to take the plants down and refix them when it comes to layering them.
